On March 30, U.S. President Donald Trump said in a statement on social media that the United States is conducting serious negotiations with Iran’s “new, more rational administration” to end its military actions in Iran, and that significant progress has already been made. Trump said that if, for any reason, an agreement is not reached in the short term (even though it is very likely that one will be reached), and the Strait of Hormuz (a globally important oil shipping route) is not immediately restored for navigation, the United States will end Iran’s “presence” there by destroying and completely eliminating all of Iran’s power generation facilities, oil wells, and the island of Khark (Iran’s main oil export terminal), and it may even include all seawater desalination facilities. Trump said that the above objectives have, so far, been deliberately avoided by the U.S., and that this move will serve as retaliation for the killings and deaths of many U.S. soldiers and other personnel during Iran’s former administration’s 47 years of “terror rule.”
