Trump slams the UK: "Go take the oil yourself!" The UK's last batch of aviation fuel will arrive in Hong Kong within 48 hours; supplies are expected to run out next week.

U.S. President Trump posted on Truth Social on March 31, publicly calling out allies such as the United Kingdom that face jet fuel shortages due to the Strait of Hormuz being blockaded, and said, “My advice is: first, buy from the United States—we have plenty; second, build up some late-arriving courage and go to the Strait to get it yourself.”

In the post, Trump directly stated, “Iran has basically been destroyed. The difficult part has already been done,” and announced, “The United States won’t help you anymore, just like you didn’t help us back then.” He signed off as “President DJT.” His tone is tough, and his wording is full of provocation.

“All of those countries that can’t get jet fuel because of the Strait of Hormuz, like the United Kingdom, which refused to get involved in the decapitation of Iran, I have a suggestion for you: Number 1, buy from the U.S., we have plenty, and Number 2, build up some delayed courage, go to the Strait, and just TAKE IT. You’ll have to start learning how to fight for yourself, the U.S.A. won’t be there to help you anymore, just like you weren’t there for us. Iran has been, essentially, decimated. The hard part is done. Go get your own oil!”

Britain’s final batch of aviation fuel will arrive within 48 hours; after that, there will be no resupply

The backdrop to Trump’s post is that the United Kingdom is facing a real and acute energy crisis. Data from shipping data provider Kpler and Vortexa show that an oil tanker, Maetiga, which is flying the Libyan flag, is carrying Britain’s last known shipment of aviation fuel sourced from the Middle East. It departed from Saudi Arabia and is expected to reach the U.K. within 48 hours (Thursday).

The problem is that currently no other tanker is able to pass through the Strait of Hormuz to reach the U.K. At least half of the United Kingdom’s aviation fuel currently comes from the Middle East. After Russia invaded Ukraine, this share rose further as imports from Russia were shut down, and coupled with declining domestic refining capacity, the situation is particularly fragile.

U.K. Prime Minister Starmer is currently holding an emergency cabinet intelligence committee meeting (COBRA). Right now, the U.K.’s diesel and gasoline prices have reached the highest level since 2022. Energy bills are expected to rise by another £288 in July, and food costs are also facing upward pressure due to disruptions in fertilizer supply.

Hegseth mocks the “Royal Navy”: other countries need to do their own part

After Trump posted, U.S. Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth immediately followed up by mocking the “great Royal Navy,” and urged other countries to “step up” to reopen the Strait of Hormuz, implying that the U.S. does not plan to continue taking responsibility for maintaining global energy routes for its allies.

It’s worth noting that earlier, Trump had asked the United Kingdom, France, China, South Korea, and Japan to send warships to escort through the Strait of Hormuz, but the U.K. refused on the grounds that it “doesn’t want to be drawn into a war.” Trump’s post has been interpreted by the public as a positive retaliation and public humiliation against the U.K.’s refusal to deploy troops.

Same day: Iranian drone attack on a Kuwaiti tanker, and Trump shares explosion footage from Isfahan

On the same day Trump made his post, several other major developments also occurred at the same time: a Kuwaiti-flagged tanker, Al-Salmi, was reportedly attacked by an Iranian drone while it was anchored off the coast of Dubai, showing that maritime threats are still ongoing. Trump, meanwhile, shared—without any explanation—a video of explosions that appears to show a large-scale airstrike by U.S. forces near the central Iranian city of Isfahan (Isfahan).

In addition, Israel continued to carry out ground operations in southern Lebanon, with the intent to clear militant forces of Hezbollah backed by Iran. The British royal family also confirmed that King Charles and the Queen will visit the United States next month for a state visit—despite Trump’s ongoing public criticism of the U.K.

Australia, Spain, and Poland have all announced temporary cuts to fuel taxes in succession to ease pressure on the public, but as of now the U.K. government has not announced similar measures. Meanwhile, due to soaring energy prices, the Treasury is estimated to bring in an additional up to £20 million per day.
