Gate News message, April 18 — Turkey and Iran have not yet begun negotiations on renewing their long-term natural gas purchase contract, which expires in July 2026, according to Turkish Energy Minister Alparslan Bayraktar on April 18.
Under the existing Turkey-Iran gas supply agreement, Iran exports 9.6 billion cubic meters of natural gas to Turkey annually. However, actual exports often fall below this volume. Turkey imported 7.6 billion cubic meters from Iran last year, accounting for approximately 13% of Turkey’s total natural gas imports. Turkey is highly dependent on energy imports, with oil and gas comprising a significant portion of its import portfolio.
Speaking at the Antalya Diplomacy Forum on April 18, Bayraktar told reporters: “I think Iran currently has many other matters to address, but we may sit down and discuss renewal.”
