Gate News reports that on March 18, U.S. Department of Defense Chief Digital and AI Officer Cameron Stanley stated that the Pentagon is actively integrating multiple large language models into its own environment to replace the previously relied-upon Anthropic system. He said the engineering work has already begun and is expected to be operational soon.
Previously, the Pentagon listed Anthropic as a “supply chain risk” due to its insistence on including clauses in contracts that prohibit large-scale surveillance and autonomous weapons. This label is typically reserved for foreign adversaries. Anthropic filed a lawsuit on March 9 over this issue.
Meanwhile, the Pentagon signed agreements with OpenAI and Elon Musk’s xAI, the latter of which has been authorized to deploy Grok in classified systems. The transition period is expected to last over a month, as Anthropic’s products are still being used in U.S. military operations related to Iran.
