在近期的Unchained節目中，Austin Griffith與Karl Floersch指出，Vitalik Buterin已承認Layer 2不再只是擴容工具。首先，以太坊通過提高gas上限與持續升級，主網處理能力顯著增強，交易成本下降速度超出預期，使得對二層網路降費的依賴減弱。其次，部分Layer 2在監管與商業壓力下放緩去中心化進程，偏離了最初“繼承以太坊信任模型”的願景。第三，如今二層網路在安全和治理上呈現多層級狀態，有的緊密依賴以太坊，有的則更像獨立平台。
這種變化讓Layer 2面臨“身份危機”。Karl Floersch認為，關鍵在於它們是否只是網路擴展，還是具備自身文化與價值主張。以Optimism為例，最初定位為以太坊延伸，如今已逐步形成獨立生態系，僅靠“更快更便宜”已不足以維繫長期吸引力。
與此同時，以太坊主網的重要性重新凸顯。手續費持續走低、安全性依舊領先，加之人工智能相關應用增長，使開發者更願意回到Layer 1部署核心業務。數據顯示，儘管Layer 2使用量仍高，但其受主網安全保護的資產規模卻在下降，表明其角色正從“價值中心”轉向“執行平台”。
在這一背景下，以太坊正重新定義Layer 1與Layer 2的分工。主網逐步回歸為信任與價值的核心錨點，而二層網路則需要通過明確應用場景與長期價值主張，證明自身在新周期中的存在意義。
