PANews January 9 Report: Gate Research Institute recently released the report “Evolution of Crypto Wallets and CEX On-Chain Development,” tracing wallets’ evolution from Bitcoin-era private key and signature tools to becoming the core gateway for on-chain finance. The report indicates that DeFi Summer enabled wallets to transition from low-frequency asset management tools to essential dApp gateways; after 2022, All-In-One wallets became the mainstream approach, completing capability validation in high-frequency scenarios like inscriptions and Memes, and gradually gaining stronger control over transaction paths and traffic distribution.

The report further notes that as the wealth effect of VCcoins diminishes and new on-chain assets and high-yield opportunities overflow, the model of CEX users remaining long-term within exchanges faces challenges, forcing CEXs to accelerate their on-chain strategies and pursue embedded wallet pathways, extending compliance, fiat channels, and existing user scale to on-chain ecosystems.

Using Gate Web3 as an example, the report points out that CEX on-chain development is not simply replicating non-custodial wallet models, but rather deeply integrating CEX’s account systems, trading capabilities, and on-chain applications while preserving user asset sovereignty, thereby enhancing asset retention and user lifetime value. Gate Research Institute believes the industry is entering a functional reorganization phase: financially functional capabilities that can be on-chained and modularized continue to migrate to wallets, while CEXs respond to boundary erosion through on-chain integration and ecosystem binding.
