According to data from Chainalysis, despite a 50% increase in ransomware attacks, the amount of cryptocurrency paid in ransomware payments in 2025 has decreased for the second consecutive year, with a decline of approximately $820 million and about 8%. The median ransom payment surged by 368% year-over-year to nearly $60,000, which analysts believe is due to unusually high payment amounts rather than a shift in attacker strategy. Only 28% of victims paid the ransom, a record low, marking a significant blow to attackers' financial motivation. Major incidents include the costly attack on Jaguar Land Rover and data breaches affecting retailers and healthcare organizations.
