SoftBank Completes $6.5 Billion Ampere Computing Takeover; Shares Surge on Deal Finalization
Japan’s SoftBank Group Corp. (SFTBY.PK) has officially closed its acquisition of Ampere Computing Holdings LLC, marking a significant expansion into the semiconductor design sector. The deal, valued at $6.5 billion (approximately 973.0 billion yen), was finalized this week through subsidiary Silver Bands 6 (US) Corp. In Tokyo trading, SoftBank shares responded positively, climbing around 5 percent to reach 16,160.00 yen per share.
The acquisition agreement was originally signed on March 19, 2025, setting the stage for this week’s completion. With the transaction now closed, Ampere Computing transitions into a full subsidiary of SoftBank Group, with its operations and financial results now consolidated into the bank’s reporting structure starting from the acquisition date.
Strategic Focus on AI and Energy Efficiency
Ampere Computing specializes in designing high-performance, energy-efficient semiconductors tailored for artificial intelligence workloads, leveraging the ARM compute platform architecture. This strategic positioning places the company at the intersection of rapidly growing AI infrastructure demand and sustainable computing trends—key priorities for SoftBank’s technology portfolio.
Financial Integration and Future Impact
Following the closure, Ampere Computing’s balance sheet and operational results will flow into SoftBank Group’s consolidated financial statements beginning immediately. The full financial impact on SoftBank’s overall consolidated results remains under detailed review as the integration process moves forward. Analysts will be watching how the acquisition contributes to future earnings reports and shareholder returns.
