Just saw the clips from Trump's inauguration on January 20, and yeah, the internet is absolutely losing it over a gesture Musk made during his speech. The guy was expressing gratitude to supporters when he did this motion—hand on chest, then arm extending upward with palm down. Immediately people started connecting it to historical Nazi salutes, and things escalated from there.

The Anti-Defamation League initially tried to cool things down, basically saying it looked like an awkward moment and we should all show some tolerance. But that didn't really land with everyone. New York University historian Ruth Ben-Ghiat straight up called it a Nazi salute with aggressive undertones. Then Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez came in hard on Twitter, saying it was unforgivable and even criticized the ADL for not taking a firmer stance.

What's interesting is how this completely overshadowed Musk's actual speech content. He was talking about bringing DOGE to Mars and planting the American flag there—pretty wild stuff—but nobody really cared about that part anymore.

Musk's response? He fired back at Ocasio-Cortez with some dismissive comments and a yawn emoji. Meanwhile, his supporters started digging up photos of other politicians in similar poses, arguing there's a double standard happening. Some far-right figures also started praising the gesture, which obviously made the whole thing even messier.

It's one of those moments where you've got legitimate historical concerns clashing with people defending it as either a mistake or a meme. The discourse is still going strong, and it's pretty clear this one's not settling down anytime soon.
