Accused of Being Satoshi Nakamoto, Cryptographer Adam Back Denies Allegations

Renowned cryptographer and CEO of Blockstream, Adam Back, firmly denies the investigation report by The New York Times (NYT) that claims he is the person behind Satoshi Nakamoto. In the report released on Wednesday (08/04), NYT alleges strong evidence from stylistic similarities (stylometry) and technical track records linking Back’s Hashcash invention to Bitcoin’s core architecture.
​Through his personal X account on Thursday (09/04), Adam Back explained that these similarities are merely coincidental due to his active participation in digital privacy and e-cash research since 1992. He emphasized that he is not Satoshi and does not know the true identity of Bitcoin’s creator. According to Back, the NYT’s claim is just a confirmation bias resulting from the numerous comments he made on the Cypherpunk forum in the past.
​In response to this controversy, Michael Saylor also defended himself, stating that past email correspondence evidence shows that Back and Satoshi are two different entities. Saylor emphasized that without valid proof such as the use of Satoshi’s private keys, all identity theories are merely narratives without credible evidence.
