Recently, the State Council’s Food Safety Office held talks with officials in charge of the governments of Chengdu and the Hechuan District of Chongqing regarding food safety issues covered by the 2026 CCTV “3·15” gala. The talks urged local authorities to strictly investigate and punish illegal conduct according to law, to conduct a deep analysis of the causes of the problems, to thoroughly identify weaknesses in their work, and to draw inferences from each case to prevent recurrence by taking effective measures to rectify issues, thereby truly safeguarding the safety of the public’s “food on the tip of the tongue.” The State Administration for Market Regulation also held talks with officials in charge of the governments of Hangzhou, Wenzhou, Suzhou, Zhengzhou, and Shenyang regarding other related problems exposed by the gala.
Talks indicated
The fundamental reason for the problems exposed by the CCTV “3·15” gala is that the main responsibilities of some producers and operators have not been effectively fulfilled. It has also revealed that in some places, the responsibility of territorial management has not been properly carried out, the ability to identify problems is insufficient, and there are gaps and loopholes in routine supervision and inspection.
Talks required
Relevant local governments must deeply recognize the extreme importance of food safety work and safeguarding market order, and earnestly strengthen their sense of responsibility, urgency, and mission. They must strictly implement the requirements of the “Four Harsher Measures,” thoroughly investigate and find the root causes of the issues exposed by the gala according to law, and maintain a high-pressure stance of strict punishment and severe accountability. They must focus on ensuring accountability is implemented, and, in accordance with regulations, discipline, and law, seriously pursue responsibility and conduct investigations and accountability for the relevant responsible units and individuals. They must solidly carry out “one case, two investigations.” They must draw profound lessons from the problems, and by drawing inferences from each case, conduct in-depth screening and rectification; strengthen regulation across the entire supply chain and across all sectors; improve mechanisms for risk prevention and resolution; resolutely prevent similar problems from happening again; effectively safeguard consumers’ lawful rights and interests; and work to create a safe and reassuring consumption environment.
