Just came across Janice McAfee's story again and it's been haunting me. She's been living in Spain for nearly three years now, doing odd jobs just to survive, while her husband John McAfee's body still sits in a morgue. The whole situation feels like something out of a thriller, except it's devastatingly real.

For context, John McAfee was worth over $100 million when he left the antivirus company back in 1994. But by the time he died in that Barcelona prison in 2022, his net worth had dropped to around $4 million according to reports. Then it basically evaporated. No will, no estate, and U.S. judgments against him meant nothing was passed to Janice. So here's this woman, widow of a tech legend, struggling to pay rent in a foreign country.

What really gets me is the autopsy situation. A Catalan court ruled in September 2023 that John died by suicide, case closed. But Janice never got to see the autopsy report. She's been fighting for it for two years. An independent autopsy would cost 30,000 euros - money she simply doesn't have. She had the funds two years ago, then a year ago, but not now. That's heartbreaking.

She's raising serious questions too. When they found John in his cell with a ligature around his neck, the prison report said he still had a pulse. But the CPR response seemed off to her - nobody removed the obstruction first, which is basic protocol. She's not claiming anything definitively, but she wants answers. She deserves them.

There's also the whole mystery of those 31 terabytes of data John kept talking about on Twitter. He claimed to have files on government corruption, but never shared any of it with Janice. He deliberately kept her in the dark to protect her. She has no idea if it even existed or where it might be.

Janice was interviewed by someone who actually knew John - they'd met at a blockchain conference in Malta back in 2018. The interviewer described her as calm, collected, zen-like. She's clearly a strong person, but you can feel the weight of unanswered questions in everything she says.

What strikes me most is that she's not looking for justice or fighting authorities. She just wants to know what really happened to her husband. She wants to fulfill his wish to be cremated. She wants closure. She wants to move on. After nearly three years of limbo, of taking whatever work she can find to eat, of living in an undisclosed location in Spain, she just wants peace.

There was also that Netflix documentary that came out - "Running with the Devil" - but Janice felt it missed the real story. It sensationalized things and centered the journalists instead of actually exploring why John felt like a fugitive or why she stood by him.

She's an American citizen but understandably hesitant to return to the U.S. given everything. She doesn't even know what her legal status is there.

The Janice McAfee net worth situation is basically zero now, but that's not really the point. The point is a widow trying to get answers about her husband's death and the basic dignity of moving forward with her life. That should be simple. It shouldn't require years of fighting bureaucracy or finding 30,000 euros for an independent autopsy.

I hope she gets her answers. Everyone deserves a chance to close this chapter and move on.
