An interesting story about the Musk family. Kimball Musk, Elon’s brother, is quite an unusual character — always wearing a cowboy hat and seemingly having his own perspective that doesn’t quite align with his brother’s.
Recently, Kimball Musk posted a rather sharp critique of Trump on X, accusing him of imposing huge taxes on American consumers through tariff policies. Meanwhile, Kimball’s own net worth is around $700 million, mainly thanks to a small stake in Tesla. It creates an interesting situation — his brother criticizes, but blood is thicker than water; they clearly respect and support each other.
Looking at them side by side, the similarities are obvious: both were born in Pretoria, have the same square jaw, straight nose, and green eyes. Both hold three citizenships — South African, Canadian, and American. But the main difference is that Kimball Musk, unlike Elon, always wears that signature cowboy hat — it’s his trademark style.
Their family history wasn’t easy. Kimball, Elon, and their younger sister Tosca experienced difficult relationships with their father, which led to their mother Maya’s divorce in 1979. After that, the family emigrated to Canada, then to the US. There, the two brothers co-founded Zip2 — a startup in the business software sector for the internet. The project was successful: in 1999, they sold it to Compaq for $307 million. Not a bad start for two guys who would later take very different paths. Kimball Musk chose a calmer, yet equally influential route, engaging in philanthropy and sustainability issues, while Elon continued to push for space exploration and electric vehicles.
