The Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS)’s Seth G. Jones said that, before the latest strikes on Iran, supplies of the United States’ key long-range and defensive munitions were already at low levels, and this constraint may force Washington to reduce its involvement in the conflict. Jones said these restrictions could help shorten the current war phase involving direct U.S. military action, but he expects that Israel will continue to carry out step-by-step strikes against Iran as needed. “We’re talking about a matter of days or weeks,” Jones said in an interview. “I think it’s extremely unlikely that this phase will last longer, because from a military perspective it can’t be sustained. Our stockpiles simply aren’t enough.” Jones also said that both Washington and Tehran have reasons to push for tensions to cool. As the war continues, Iran’s leadership will continue to face strikes, and its military capabilities will also be weakened.
