Why did AI · Nothing CEO Pei Yu change his view on smart glasses?

IT Home, April 1 — Bloomberg reporter Mark Gurman reported early this morning (April 1 Beijing time) that Nothing is advancing its smart glasses project, attempting to expand its business from smartphones and audio devices into the AI wearable field.

Sources revealed that this smart glasses are planned to be launched in the first half of 2027. Meanwhile, Nothing is also developing a new headset emphasizing AI features, expected to be released within the year.

In terms of company strategy, Nothing CEO Pei Yu has undergone a shift. Insiders say that Pei Yu initially was not optimistic about smart glasses, but recently has clearly shifted toward a multi-device layout. As companies like Google and Apple prepare to enter the market and compete with Meta, the smart glasses track is rapidly heating up.

Nothing’s approach is to mainly place computing power in smartphones and the cloud, with the glasses themselves only relying on components like cameras, microphones, and speakers to handle data collection and interaction functions. The goal is to achieve more automated operation processes through AI and provide personalized experiences.

Design remains an important selling point for Nothing. Known for its transparent body and light strip design, this style will also be continued in the smart glasses products.

Nothing is focusing heavily on emerging markets such as India and parts of Europe, but has not yet made significant breakthroughs in the U.S. market. Last year, Nothing completed a $200 million Series C funding round, with the company’s valuation reaching $1.3 billion (IT Home note: approximately 8.98B RMB at current exchange rates), with investors including GV (formerly Google Ventures) and Qualcomm Ventures.

AI has become a core part of Nothing’s strategy. Recently, Nothing also launched a tool that can create home screen widgets through ambient programming and share them among users. At the same time, AI has been integrated into the operating system to handle tasks such as voice memo analysis and screenshot recognition.
