ME News report, April 9 (UTC+8). Three European diplomats told Reuters on Thursday that NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte has informed some member countries that U.S. President Donald Trump hopes the allies will make concrete commitments in the coming days to help secure the Strait of Hormuz. In recent weeks, Trump has repeatedly accused NATO of being a “paper tiger,” and has even threatened to withdraw from the transatlantic alliance composed of 32 member countries. He believes that Washington’s European allies enjoy U.S. security guarantees, but have not provided sufficient support for the U.S. and Israel’s bombing operations in Iran. Currently, the United Kingdom is spearheading an alliance of about 40 countries, trying to come up with a package of military and diplomatic plans aimed at reopening and protecting the Strait of Hormuz, but there are almost no signs that any substantial breakthrough can be achieved in the near term. French President Emmanuel Macron said on Wednesday that about 15 countries are planning to jointly push for the strait to resume navigation. (Source: ODAILY)
