According to a person with knowledge of the matter, on March 18 local time, the U.S. Navy’s “Gerald R. Ford” aircraft carrier will return to the Mediterranean for maintenance and resupply after a “laundry room fire,” according to the Associated Press. The source said that this largest and most advanced U.S. Navy aircraft carrier will dock at a naval base located on Crete, Greece, or at another port in Europe. The Ford carrier is currently operating in the Red Sea, and its withdrawal would mean U.S. Central Command would be left with only one aircraft carrier, the “Lincoln,” to support military operations against Iran. According to military officials, the “laundry room fire” that occurred last week left more than 100 berths on the Ford unusable, and about 200 sailors received medical examinations after inhaling smoke.
