Cailian Press, April 2nd (Editor: Shi Zhengcheng) According to the latest market news, the Taweelah smelting plant under the UAE’s largest aluminum producer, Emirates Global Aluminium (EGA), was attacked by Iranian missiles and drones last weekend. It has been forced to cease operations due to “out-of-control shutdown” of the smelting equipment.

As background, late Saturday Beijing time, [Emirates Global Aluminium issued a statement] (cailianshe://article_detail?article_id=2327965) stating that earlier that day, its Taweelah production site in the Khalifa Economic Zone of Abu Dhabi was attacked by Iranian missiles and drones and suffered severe damage.

Although the official has not publicly disclosed the progress of the “damage assessment” since then, international aluminum prices have continued to rise since last weekend, approaching the highs seen since 2022. Besides Emirates Global Aluminium, another major aluminum producer in the region, Bahrain Aluminum, also confirmed that its facilities were attacked over the weekend. Both factories are among the world’s largest aluminum plants, with a production capacity of 1.6 million tons in 2025.

On Wednesday evening, media citing informed sources reported that the Taweelah smelter in the suburbs of Abu Dhabi experienced a power outage during the attack last week. Equipment known as “potlines” was forced into uncontrolled shutdown, causing the metal to solidify within the smelting circuit, severely damaging production operations.

Regarding this situation, analyst Bernard Dahdah from Natixis SA hypothesized in a recent report that the metal solidification in the smelting process could cause damage that might take at least a year to repair. This could turn the aluminum market from a surplus of 200k tons next year into a supply gap of about 1.3 million tons.

Supporting this intelligence, earlier on Wednesday, there were reports that Emirates Global Aluminium had begun大量出售氧化铝 in the market, which is a key raw material for aluminum production.

It is reported that Emirates Global Aluminium plans to sell several batches of alumina expected to be shipped between April and June. The aluminum supply chain can be simply described as mining bauxite, refining it into alumina, and then smelting it into finished metal.

Emirates Global Aluminium itself can produce alumina and usually purchases large quantities of this raw material to supply the Taweelah smelter in Abu Dhabi and a second smelter located in Dubai.
