Deluri: Global Container Freight Index Rises by 3%

Drewry’s latest report shows that this week (up to March 5), the Drewry World Container Index (WCI) increased by 3%, reaching $1,958 per FEU. The rise is mainly driven by higher freight rates on trans-Pacific routes. As Chinese factories gradually return to full production after the Spring Festival, Drewry expects spot rates on the eastbound trans-Pacific route to continue strengthening in the coming weeks. Additionally, the attacks by the United States and Israel on Iran have effectively frozen oil tanker transportation through the Strait of Hormuz, which carries about 20% of the world’s oil supply, sparking supply concerns and pushing up crude oil prices. If the situation persists, rising vessel fuel costs, war risk surcharges, and operational disruptions could increase overall freight costs, putting upward pressure on container shipping rates.
