The tycoon was walking on a narrow plank over a gorge when a beggar came toward him from the other side.

The tycoon was eager to go home, so he lowered himself and tried to let the beggar pass first. The beggar insisted on going first and even spoke in a disrespectful manner.
He thought to himself: He has a fortune and his wife and concubines; the beggar has nothing. If things got out of hand, he was afraid something unexpected might happen. So he smiled and said, “Sure, you go first.”
Afterward, the beggar bragged everywhere, saying that when the tycoon saw him, it was like a grandson meeting his grandfather—afraid yet respectful. The tycoon was a well-known figure locally, and his dignity was completely ruined.
Soon, the tycoon put out the word: the beggar had once helped him greatly, and he specially rewarded him with 10 taels of silver as a repayment.
The beggar was completely at a loss, but when he saw he would get money, he was naturally happy to accept it.
That night, the beggar was targeted by robbers; the silver was snatched away, and he also lost his life.
