Japan’s major energy company INPEX has extended its strategic cooperation agreement with Indonesia’s national oil company and signed an independent upstream business memorandum of understanding with the subsidiary, Indonesia Upstream Energy Company, deepening its business footprint in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

This extension was carried out through INPEX’s subsidiary INPEX Masela, focusing on advancing the Abadi liquefied natural gas project located in the Masela block in the Arafura Sea, which was initially covered by an agreement reached by both parties in 2023.

Meanwhile, INPEX also signed a new memorandum of understanding with Indonesia Upstream Energy Company to seek upstream oil and gas business opportunities in Indonesia and Southeast Asia.

Both parties stated that these agreements will support cooperation along the liquefied natural gas value chain related to the Abadi project, while expanding upstream business collaborations, especially within Indonesia.

INPEX, which has been operating in Indonesia since the 1960s, said these agreements align with its “Vision 2035” strategy to expand its natural gas and liquefied natural gas businesses.

The company added that it will continue to strengthen its business footprint in Southeast Asia (with a focus on Indonesia) through strategic partnerships and project development.
