The UN Secretary-General strongly condemns the attack on United Nations peacekeeping personnel in Lebanon.
On March 31st, local time, UN Secretary-General Guterres issued a statement strongly condemning the attack that resulted in the death of United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) peacekeepers. He expressed deepest condolences to the families, friends, and colleagues of the fallen peacekeepers, as well as to the Republic of Indonesia, and wished a speedy recovery to the injured peacekeepers. The statement pointed out that attacks against peacekeepers must stop; such acts severely violate international humanitarian law and Security Council Resolution 1701, and may constitute war crimes, which must be held accountable. Guterres strongly urged all parties to comply with their international legal obligations to ensure the safety of UN personnel and property; he called for an immediate de-escalation of the situation and full compliance with the obligations set forth in Security Council Resolution 1701. Guterres expressed his deepest gratitude to all soldiers serving in UNIFIL and reiterated the importance of ensuring their safety and freedom of action. (CCTV News)
