Just realized a lot of people don't know how easy it actually is to update your SASSA details, especially if you're on the SRD grant. The whole process is way different depending on which grant you're getting, so let me break it down because I've seen people stress over this unnecessarily.
If you're on the regular permanent grants (old age, disability, child support), you basically can't do anything online—you gotta go to your nearest SASSA office in person. Take your ID, proof of your new bank account (bank statement not older than three months works), and fill out their Payment Method Change Form. They'll send it to the bank and it takes like 21 working days to go through. Pro tip: submit before the 15th of the month if you want it to work for next month's payment, otherwise you're waiting another cycle. For changing your cellphone number on permanent grants, same deal—call 0800 60 10 11 or visit the office.
But here's where it gets actually convenient: the SRD R370 grant lets you change pretty much everything online. You go to the official SASSA SRD portal, punch in your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS. Click the link, enter your new bank details, done. Same for updating your phone number on SRD—you use their contact portal, enter your ID and application number, type in your new cell, get an OTP sent to confirm it. Takes a few days for verification usually.
One thing everyone gets wrong: your bank account HAS to be in your name only. No joint accounts, no third-party stuff. SASSA won't touch it. Also, if you're doing the cash send option for SRD, your phone number needs to be RICA-registered (your real name). And please, PLEASE use the official SASSA website for this—there are sketchy fake sites out there trying to scam people's details. If the online thing isn't working for you, just call the helpline or go to an office. Not worth the risk.
Honestly, once you know the difference between permanent grants and SRD, it's pretty straightforward. SRD change number process is the smoothest part of the whole thing.
