U.S. lawmakers demand the defense secretary resign over attack on Iranian elementary school

U.S. Senator Gillibrand said on the 12th that U.S. President Trump should provide an explanation regarding the attack on an Iranian elementary school and demanded that U.S. Defense Secretary Hegseth resign in disgrace over the incident. Gillibrand wrote on social media: “Regarding the incident in which Trump ordered an attack on an Iranian elementary school that resulted in children’s deaths, the American people are entitled to an answer from Trump. Hegseth has repeatedly proved that he is unfit to hold a leadership position. Trump must put the national interest first and fire Hegseth.”

On February 28, the U.S. and Israel launched a large-scale military operation against Iran. A school in Minab, in southern Iran, was attacked, and at least 165 people were killed, the majority of them young girls around 10 years old.

Previously reported by The New York Times and the online magazine The Intercept, preliminary investigations found that when U.S. forces struck an Iranian Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps Navy base near the elementary school, they “misidentified” their target. Some informed officials said that personnel at U.S. Central Command used “outdated” data provided by the U.S. Defense Intelligence Agency to create the coordinates for the airstrike targets.
