So I had this weird problem where my phone kept showing as private every time I called someone. At first I thought I was going crazy, but apparently it's more common than I thought. Took me a while to figure out how to actually fix it, so here's what worked for me.
For Android, the private number removal basically comes down to finding your caller ID settings. On most phones it's in Settings > Apps > Phone > Caller ID, but honestly it varies by manufacturer. Samsung, Google, Xiaomi all hide it in slightly different spots. The key is you're looking for something that says "Show number" or "Network default." Once you flip that on, your carrier should update it within a few minutes. If it doesn't work, try clearing the phone app's cache and restarting.
On iPhone it's actually simpler. Just go Settings > Apps > Phone and toggle on "Show My Caller ID." If you have multiple lines like an eSIM, you gotta do it for each one separately. Some older iPhones had display glitches after updates, so if you don't even see the option, restart the phone and check if there's a carrier settings update waiting.
Here's the thing though - sometimes private number removal doesn't stick even after you change the settings. That's usually because your carrier is blocking it on their end. You can try USSD codes like dialing *31# to force your number visible, or #31# to check the status. If that still doesn't work, reset your network settings completely. On Android go to Settings > System > Reset options > Reset mobile network settings. On iPhone it's Settings > General > Transfer or Reset iPhone > Reset Network Settings.
Other stuff that can mess with your caller ID: old privacy apps with deep permissions, switching between network types, SIM cards older than five years, or roaming internationally. If you've tried everything and it's still showing private, might be worth checking if any of those apply to you.
