Just realized a lot of people struggle with updating their SASSA details, especially when it comes to banking info and phone numbers. The process is actually different depending on which grant you're getting, so here's what I learned.
If you're on a permanent grant (old age, disability, child grant), you basically have to go in person to a SASSA office. Can't do it online. You'll need to fill out a Payment Method Change Form and bring your ID plus proof of your new bank account - they want a recent bank statement or an official letter from the bank. Takes up to 21 working days to process, and if you want it to apply next month, submit before the 15th.
Now, the SRD R370 grant is way different because it's all online. For an srd account number change, you go to the official SASSA SRD portal, enter your ID number, and they send you a secure link via SMS. Click the link, input your new bank details, and you're done. Just make sure the account is in your name - they won't pay into joint or third-party accounts. Verification takes a few days to a couple weeks.
Phone number updates follow the same pattern. Permanent grants? Head to the office or call 0800 60 10 11. SRD grant? Use their contact portal, enter your ID and Application ID, put in your new number, verify with an OTP. Pretty straightforward if you use the official links.
One heads up though - there are fake SASSA websites floating around trying to scam people. Always make sure you're on the legit SASSA portal before entering any details. If the online process gives you trouble, just call or visit an office in person. Takes longer but it's safer.
