Just realized I need to change my bank details for my R350 grant and honestly the process is more complicated than I thought. So here's what I learned after going through it.
If you're getting a permanent grant, you basically can't do this online no matter what. You have to physically go to your nearest SASSA office with your ID and a bank statement that's less than 3 months old. They'll give you a form to fill out, send it to the bank, and then you wait. Could take up to 21 days. One important thing though - they won't transfer money into a joint account or someone else's account, has to be purely in your name.
But here's the thing that caught me off guard: if you want the new bank details to work for next month's payment, you need to submit everything before the 15th. Miss that deadline and you're stuck with the old account for another cycle. That's frustrating when you're trying to change your bank details for r350.
For the SRD R370 grant it's actually way easier - everything's online through their portal. You enter your ID, they send you a link via SMS, you update your account info there. Still takes a few days to a couple weeks for verification though.
Also learned the hard way that there are fake SASSA websites out there trying to scam people, so always use the official portal. If the online thing doesn't work, just call their helpline at 0800 60 10 11 or visit in person. Annoying but safer honestly.
