You know what's wild? I've been tracking this pattern for years and it still catches people off guard. The high tight flag – it's this incredibly rare setup that William O'Neil documented back in the day, and when it actually forms, things can get absolutely insane.

Here's what makes it so powerful: a stock absolutely rips, doubling or more in just 8 weeks or less. Then it pulls back, but here's the key – and this is crucial – the pullback stays tight. We're talking no more than 20-25% correction. Most traders see that kind of move and think "no way I'm buying after that." But that's exactly where the big winners hide.

Qualcomm back in 1999 is the textbook example. The stock broke out of a classic high tight flag and went on to gain 2000%. Just insane. More recently, you had Taser (now Axon Enterprise) in 2003-2004 when non-lethal weapons started getting adopted by police departments everywhere. The stock ran from 60 cents to $60 – and it actually formed two consecutive high tight flags in that period.

What I find interesting is that these patterns don't just happen randomly. There's always something fundamentally new driving the move. With AMD in 2016, it was their chips becoming essential for gaming and crypto mining. The stock broke out around $8 and never looked back – eventually hitting $122.

The thing about high tight flags is they require real catalysts. It's not just technical momentum; there's actual business change underneath. That's what separates them from other breakout patterns.

First Citizens Bancshares was an interesting case study when they made that move on the SVB situation back in 2023. The FDIC deal was massive – $110 billion in assets – and the stock jumped over 50% in a single session. Analysts started projecting much stronger earnings, and sure enough, the setup looked like it could form that rare pattern we're always hunting for.

The lesson here? When you see that combination – massive move, tight consolidation, and real fundamental change – that's when things get interesting. The high tight flag is rare for a reason. But when it appears, it's worth paying attention.
