On February 26, 2026, local media reported that a fire broke out at PT. Huafei Nickel Cobalt, located within the Indonesia Weda Bay Industrial Park (IWIP) in Central Halmahera, North Maluku Province, Indonesia. According to multiple videos widely circulated on social media, the fire appears to have occurred at the factory’s lime storage facility. The incident took place on the evening of Wednesday, February 25, 2026. It is currently unclear whether there were any casualties.

PT. Huafei Nickel Cobalt is a high-pressure acid leaching (HPAL) wet processing plant with a planned capacity of 120,000 tons of nickel metal per year, equipped with a 5 million-ton-per-year sulfuric acid production facility. Its main product is MHP, an important raw material in the new energy industry chain. Lime is a key neutralizing agent and auxiliary material for tailings treatment in wet processing.
