The Malta-based cryptocurrency exchange Gate Technology Ltd. has obtained a payment institution license under the EU Payment Services Directive 2 (PSD2) issued by the Malta Financial Services Authority. CEO Giovanni Cunti stated that this move enables the company to build a compliant bridge between traditional finance and Web3 technology across Europe and to align with the upcoming Malta Payment and Information Security Management (MiCA) framework. The license allows Gate to expand its payment services within the EU through passporting rights and, on this basis, further develop its existing trading and custody services in Malta under the MiCA license.
