Gate News message, April 15 — A major fire broke out on the night of April 11 at Russia’s Yuri Gagarin Aircraft Plant in Komsomolsk-on-Amur, causing partial roof collapse at Workshop No. 46, according to Ukrainian military outlet Militarnyi. The facility is a key production site for Russia’s Su-35 and Su-57 stealth fighter jets.
Workshop No. 46 specializes in manufacturing polymer composite material (PCM) components essential for fighter jet assembly, including ailerons, air intakes, and wing structures. Satellite imagery analysis confirmed the damage. The Su-57 requires eight times more composite material processing than the Su-35S, and experts expect final assembly of new aircraft to be halted or significantly delayed until alternative parts sourcing is established.
Russia currently operates approximately 40 Su-57 aircraft, with annual production limited to single digits—around eight units at most. The fire is expected to further slow production, which had already been constrained by Western sanctions and supply chain disruptions. Russia faces pressure to modernize its air force and fulfill export orders to Algeria while replacing losses from the Ukraine conflict.
