The U.S. Secret Service issued a statement on the 22nd local time, stating that a man attempted to breach President Trump’s private residence, Mar-a-Lago, in Florida, and was shot and killed.
The Secret Service said the man was in his early 20s and from North Carolina. Around 1:30 a.m. on the 22nd, the man unlawfully entered the security perimeter of Mar-a-Lago and was subsequently shot and killed by Secret Service personnel and a sheriff’s deputy from Palm Beach County, Florida.
The Secret Service stated that the man was found near the north gate of Mar-a-Lago, suspected to be carrying a firearm and a fuel canister.
According to Palm Beach County police, officers asked the man to drop his weapon at the scene. The man put down the fuel canister but then raised a gun and assumed a shooting stance, after which he was shot and killed by police. No Secret Service or police personnel were injured during the incident. The man’s background and motives are still under investigation.
FBI Director Christopher Wray posted on social media that “all necessary resources” will be used to investigate.
