London Metropolitan Police announced on the afternoon of February 23 local time that former UK ambassador to the United States, Peter Mandelson, has been arrested on suspicion of misconduct in public office. It is reported that Mandelson has been taken to a police station in London for questioning.
Earlier this month, the London Police Department announced that an investigation had been launched into Mandelson for alleged misconduct during his public service.
Mandelson, 72 years old, previously held key positions such as Business Secretary during the administrations of former Prime Ministers Tony Blair and Gordon Brown. In February 2025, current Prime Minister Rishi Sunak appointed him as the UK ambassador to the United States, but Mandelson was dismissed after only seven months in the role due to revelations of his connections with Jeffrey Epstein.
Mandelson previously referred to Epstein as his “best friend” in a birthday greeting. A batch of documents disclosed last month showed that between 2003 and 2004, Mandelson and his partner were suspected of receiving three transfers from Epstein totaling $75,000. During his tenure as Business Secretary in 2009, he also forwarded an economic briefing he had written to then-Prime Minister Brown to Epstein, which included internal discussions about the UK government’s asset sales and fundraising efforts following the 2008 global financial crisis. In May 2010, he also reportedly disclosed to Epstein in advance that the European Union was about to launch a €500 billion eurozone rescue plan.
